One of the big changes to the Spanish classes four years ago was the addition of a textbook.  We have adopted the Realidades series for grades 7-12.  With this series, each student has a textbook and a workbook.  During class, there are additional resources such as an audio program, videos, and overheads.  A great feature of the Realidades books is the extra practice provided online.  In both the textbook and the workbook, there will be prompts to "Go online" for extra practice—practice specific to the current vocabulary/grammar being studied.  To access this practice you need to go the publisher's website and type the code given to you in the prompt into the appropriate boxes on the upper left-hand corner of the screen.  This will take you directly to the practice activity.

Syllabus

La clase de español                       Srta Schultz                   2009-2010

¡Bienvenidos!  I am happy that you have chosen to take Spanish this year!  I ask that you review the rules, policies, and grading procedures on this sheet, and then make sure to keep it so that you can look at it later if you have questions.

Class Materials

Pen/Pencil                                Textbook                                 Folder/Binder (recommended)

Notebook/loose leaf paper       Homework Packets

We purchased new textbooks four years ago.  They are still in good condition, and I ask that you please take care with these items while they are in your possession.  You are responsible for damage to, or loss of, these books.

**Personal Spanish-English dictionary—This would be a good resource to have for Spanish II and up.

Grading

Participation=15%                    Quizzes/Projects/Class Work=55%

Homework=10%                     Final Exam=20%

A         =100-93%                   B-        =82.99-80%                D+       =69.99-67%

B          =86.99-83%                C-        =72.99-70%                F          =59.99% and below

Homework/Late Work

Homework is assigned most days and will be checked at the beginning of class.  Students who have not completed their work will receive a zero for the day.  Late homework is not accepted.  Projects and other class work can be turned in late, for 80% the next day and 50% each day thereafter.

Homework is your chance to make mistakes and to learn from them.  We will go over each assignment in class.  Make sure to correct any errors (or verify correct answers) and your homework will become a study guide.

**Just because you do not officially have homework, or you finished it quickly, does not mean that you are done.  Studying 10-15 minutes a night is important.  There is a lot of material to learn.  We will practice and review during class, but studying at home is essential and can only help to improve your grade!

Cheating/Plagiarism

Cheating and plagiarism are not acceptable, and you will receive a zero.  Use of online translators will be considered cheating, and it is often obvious when you have used one.  If you need to look up individual words, www.wordreference.com is a good online tool.

Extra Credit

Extra credit may be offered during the semester, and will be offered to the entire class.  Students must take advantage of the extra credit when it is offered.  There will be no opportunity at the end of the term.

**Noticias del mundo hispanohablante—This is a standing extra credit option.  Students may bring in a news article about a Spanish-speaking country/person/team/event and present it briefly to the class.  This will be worth two points per article and students can bring in a maximum of five articles per quarter.  Please note, these articles will not be accepted during the last week of each quarter.

Attendance and Participation

Be prepared and be on time!!  To get the most out of class, you need to be here and you need to have your materials.  Participation is an important part of your grade that includes:

--volunteering answers

--listening attentively

--speaking Spanish whenever possible

--not becoming distracted or causing distractions (i.e. talking out of turn)

--bringing necessary materials to class

--being on time to class

--1st period-You are allowed 3 tardies per semester.  Each tardy thereafter will result in an office detention.

--2nd-8th periods-Same as 1st period, but detentions are served with the teacher (at lunch or after school).

            --4th and 5th tardies—15 minute detention, 6+ tardies—30 minute detention

--RESPECT for yourself, the teacher, your classmates, and property

**You will receive a weekly participation grade, worth 5 points.

Responsibility

--YOU are responsible for make-up work.  If you miss a day, you need to find out what you missed.  If your absence is excused, the previously assigned homework is due upon your return. (If you are in class on Monday, and sick on Tuesday, then Monday’s homework should be done when you return on Wednesday.)

--Quiz make ups and retakes should be completed within one week.  You are allowed one retake per quiz.  There is no retake on the final exam.  Schedule a time with the teacher as soon as possible.

--If you are confused or feel that you need extra help, PLEASE let me know.  I want to help you, but I can’t do that if I don’t know there is a problem.

Classroom Rules

--Be prepared and be on time.

--Follow directions the first time they are given.

--RESPECT

--NO food or beverage is allowed in the classroom, with the exception of plain water.  This is a school rule.

--Hats, cell phones, personal music devices, small video games, etc. are not allowed in the classroom.
